At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom around the world, and we couldn’t do this without hiring the best people. We’re a group of hard-working overachievers who are deeply focused on building the future of finance and Web3 for our users across the globe, whether they’re trading, storing, staking or using crypto. Know those people who always lead the group project? That’s us.

There are a few things we look for across all hires we make at Coinbase, regardless of role or team. First, we look for candidates who will thrive in a culture like ours, where we default to trust, embrace feedback, and disrupt ourselves. Second, we expect all employees to commit to our mission-focused approach to our work. Finally, we seek people who are excited to learn about and live crypto, because those are the folks who enjoy the intense moments in our sprint and recharge work culture. We’re a remote-first company looking to hire the absolute best talent all over the world.

Ready to #LiveCrypto? Who you are:

  • You’ve got positive energy. You’re optimistic about the future and determined to get there.
  • You’re never tired of learning. You want to be a pro in bleeding edge tech like DeFi, NFTs, DAOs, and Web 3.0.
  • You appreciate direct communication. You’re both an active communicator and an eager listener - because let’s face it, you can’t have one without the other. You’re cool with candid feedback and see every setback as an opportunity to grow.
  • You can pivot on the fly. Crypto is constantly evolving, so our priorities do, too. What you worked on last month may not be what you work on today, and that excites you. You’re not looking for a boring job.
  • You have a “can do” attitude. Our teams create high-quality work on quick timelines. Owning a problem doesn’t scare you, but rather empowers you to take 100% responsibility for achieving our mission.
  • You want to be part of a winning team. We’re stronger together, and you’re a person who embraces being pushed out of your comfort zone.

As a member of our team you will be responsible for working with regulatory and standard setting bodies around the world to help ensure the adoption of workable and globally harmonized rules for digital assets. This requires applying a deep understanding of how digital assets generally, and tokenized versions of traditional financial instruments specifically, implicate existing regulations and those currently under development by national and supranational authorities. Typical engagement activities include (1) drafting letters to regulatory authorities in response to public consultations, (2) producing briefing documents for our executive team and broader audiences on regulatory developments, and (3) meeting with staff and key officials at relevant regulatory bodies on key issues.

For this position we are looking for someone who has worked extensively with (or within) an industry trade group or standard setting organization on the prudential or market treatment of tokenized instruments such as fiat-backed stablecoins, digital asset securities and commodities, virtual currencies such as Bitcoin, and other token-based payment/utility instruments. You must have a firm understanding how digital asset transfer, custody, and settlement works in relation to traditional financial instruments and how rules need to be adapted to achieve the same regulatory outcomes. For this role, there will be a particular emphasis on engagement with international organizations including the Financial Stability board (FSB), Basel Committee on Bank Supervision (BCBS), Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures (CPMI), Bank of International Settlement (BIS), and International Organizations of Securities Commissions (IOSCO).

What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties):

  • Draft written responses to regulatory consultations
  • Work with cross functional product/legal/policy teams to establish internal policy views on emergent regulatory issues
  • Work with trade groups and other industry participants on consensus industry positions
  • Brief executive level audiences on the potential impact of new/proposed rules on existing/future products and practices
  • Organize and lead external engagements with regulators, trade organizations, standard setters, and think tanks

What we look for in you (ie. job requirements):

  • A strong background in prudential, bank, or markets regulation
  • Experience organizing written responses to discussion papers, concept releases, and proposals issued by regulatory authorities globally as well as a firm understanding of how to directly engage with staff at regulatory bodies on the substance of the responses
  • A track record of successful cross-functional collaboration
  • 6+ years of experience
  • Very strong writing and communication skills
  • Experience at a regulatory agency, market participant, trade association, or standard setting organization (or law/consulting firm representing one of these organizations) working on regulatory policy with a specific focus on digital asset regulation.
  • Ability to manage cross-functional teams, including internal subject matter experts (e.g., analysts, attorneys, and economists) as well as external counsel and consultants
  • Note that primary regulatory experience in a non-US jurisdiction is preferred, but not required. The successful candidate will be expected to develop global regulatory expertise as it relates to digital asset adoption.

Nice to haves:

  • Bachelor’s (or non-US equivalent) + advanced degree in law, economics, finance, or equivalent preferred.
